We are told we must “modernize.” In practice, this means signing massive licensing agreements with Silicon Valley giants. We migrate our data to their clouds. We run our student analytics on their algorithms. We teach on their platforms. We have become tenants in our own house, paying rent to a global technological oligopoly that views the University not as a sacred institution, but as a “vertical market” for customer acquisition.
The dominant strategy to counter this has been a fantasy of Autonomy. “We will build our own systems,” the Rectors say. “We will build sovereign infrastructure.”
But let us be brutally honest: We cannot. The University cannot compete with the trillion-dollar R&D budgets of the AI hyperscalers. We cannot build a “Sovereign Cloud” that matches the speed and security of the “Host.” Every dollar we spend trying to replicate the plumbing of the internet is a dollar wasted.

The survival of the University depends on our ability to stop trying to be the “Host” (building the infrastructure) and start acting like the “Virus” (injecting the purpose).
From Tech Company to Context Company

It means the University administration stops pretending to be a technology company. We accept that the infrastructure belongs to the Global North. We accept that the AI models are trained in California.
But we become aggressive Prompt Engineers at an Institutional Scale.

This strategy is particularly potent for the Global South. We have long been the raw material providers for the global economy—first gold and rubber, now data. The Global North extracts our data, refines it into AI models, and sells it back to us as “intelligence.”

If we lose our “Code”—our distinct values, our connection to the local community, our ethical “Orthogonality”—then we simply become a franchise of the global tech stack. We become “Google University, Cape Town Branch.”
To survive as a Parasite, the University must maintain a High Internal Definition. We must be fanatical about who we are and what we want, precisely because we are using tools that are indifferent to both.
The Final Pivot
The technical offices of the future should not be staffed by IT managers trying to patch servers. They should be staffed by Teleological Architects—philosophers, ethicists, and strategists who know how to code purpose into the machine.
