Before the arrival of the colonial economy, African agriculture was a masterpiece of chaos. A single plot of land might host sorghum, millet, yams, and medicinal herbs, intercropped in a messy, resilient tangle. It was illegible to the European eye, which saw only “weeds” and “inefficiency.” But it was a system engineered for survival. The diversity of the crops protected the soil, confused pests, and ensured that if the rains failed for one species, they might suffice for another.
The colonial project replaced this resilience with the Plantation. It cleared the “bush” to plant vast, orderly rows of a single cash crop—cotton, rubber, or cocoa.
The monoculture was a miracle of efficiency. It produced massive yields of a specific commodity valued by the global market. It integrated the colony into the world economy. But it came at a terrible ecological price. The soil was rapidly depleted. The local population, no longer growing their own food, became dependent on imported grain. And when a blight arrived—or the global price of cotton dropped—the entire system collapsed into famine. The colony had traded resilience for optimization.
In 2025, the South African university is clearing the bush again. We are rooting out the messy, diverse, and specific epistemologies of the continent to plant a new, high-yield monoculture. Its name is the Foundational Model.
This is Ecological Capture.
The logic of the Foundational Model (GPT-4, Gemini, Claude) is the logic of the Plantation. It is a single, massive system designed to be “General Purpose.” It swallows the entire internet and outputs a statistical mean of human thought. It is incredibly efficient. It can write a poem, debug Python, and summarize a history of the Boer War in seconds.
Because it is so efficient, the university is reorganizing itself around the harvest. We are witnessing a rapid standardization of the curriculum to accommodate the capabilities of the model.
If the AI cannot grade a specific type of assessment—say, an oral defense in isiXhosa or a field journal on indigenous botany—that assessment is quietly retired. It is “inefficient.” If a subject requires a corpus of texts that has not been digitized and ingested by the model—such as the unwritten customary laws of the Eastern Cape—it is marginalized. It is “outdated.”
We are teaching our students to farm the monoculture. We call it “Prompt Engineering.”
This creates a dangerous feedback loop. The more we use the Foundational Model, the more we atrophy the “native crops” of knowledge. Consider the fate of African languages in this ecosystem. The model can speak isiZulu, but it speaks it like a tourist—grammatically correct, perhaps, but culturally hollow. It translates concepts from English into isiZulu, rather than thinking in isiZulu concepts.
By adopting this tool as the primary interface for learning, we are enforcing a “semantic bleaching.” The rich, untranslatable specificity of African thought is smoothed out to fit the vector space of the model. The student learns to think in the “Globish” of the internet, because that is what yields the best results from the machine.
The “Policing Bloc” worries that students are cheating. The “Philosophers” worry about how to cite the model. Both miss the ecological catastrophe. The problem is not that the student uses the tool; the problem is that the tool only grows one type of corn.
We are creating an Intellectual Dust Bowl.
Just as the cotton plantation depleted the soil, the reliance on a single, American-trained model depletes the cognitive soil of the university. It creates a fragility in the system. If OpenAI changes its “safety” parameters to exclude certain topics, or if the model begins to hallucinate (a digital blight), the university has no backup food supply. We have forgotten how to grow the millet of independent inquiry.
The “Bureaucrats” at institutions like NWU and UKZN celebrate this standardization. They see it as “alignment with global standards.” They purchase “Enterprise Licenses” that ensure every student is planting the same seeds. They view the local, specific knowledge systems of the African university as “legacy debt” to be cleared.
But a university is supposed to be a seed bank. Its function is to preserve and propagate the specific, weird, and un-scalable knowledge that the market ignores. By converting the campus into a plantation for Silicon Valley’s cognitive commodities, we are destroying our own immunity.
We are producing graduates who are excellent at navigating the consensus of the Global North, but increasingly illiterate in the reality of the Global South. They can discuss the ethics of self-driving cars (a favorite topic of the models) with fluency, but they struggle to conceptualize a legal framework for communal land tenure, because the model keeps trying to turn it into a property deed.
The yield is high. The harvest is record-breaking. But the soil is turning to dust. And we have sold the seeds of the next season to the company store.
